Moving from GoDaddy website builder/online store to WordPress/Woocommerce site

We currently have our domain, hosting and SSL certificate through GoDaddy.  We are currently using their website builder and online store for our business but feel we have outgrown their limitations.  After researching we have decided we want to move to a WordPress site with Woocommerce plug-in to operate sales.

We would like to build the WordPress site in the background whilst leaving the current site running (so we do not effect sales).  Firstly, is this possible to do with the GoDaddy WordPress hosting?

Once the WordPress site is fully constructed we would like to switch the site from the old GoDaddy website builder/online store to the new WordPress site.  How can we do this smoothly without losing our SEO rankings for the current site and also moving all links over at the same time?

Thanks for any help.

Hey there @MattX,

Yes, you can absolutely leave your current site live while you work on a WordPress site to replace it. The easiest way to do this in cPanel is to create a subdomain like dev.domain.com or test.domain.com, build it there, and then transfer it over to the primary domain once complete. Or you can purchase a dummy domain to build on. Whichever is easier for you. If you're using the Managed WordPress plan, you can just use one of the provided temp URLs.

A change over in domain from one hosting product to another incurs the same propagation time as any DNS change. It can take 24-48 hours but it's usually going to update in less than an hour.

Hope that helps!
